Neon Salamander got off to a dodgy start in 1986 when Billy McPherson and Dane Tate, roommates in an apartment with two other unforgettable characters, decided to record letters to friends who had moved home for the summer. They surmised that recording the letters would be drastically more entertaining and time-consuming than simply writing them. These letters took on such epic proportions, it was decided to construct them like albums with section titles. This required a name for the newfound entity, and Billy wasted no time in submitting Neon Salamander. It was perhaps a year later that the writing of music actually entered into the picture.
Choosing to keep a low profile and earn a living, Billy and Dane have seldom engaged in the activities most bands do, like playing live. It's a concept to keep in mind for sure, but Neon Salamander is conservative in that respect. Not that there haven't ever been any live performances, because there have been three or four over the twenty-plus years. It's just that Neon Salamander prefer to rest up really well between shows. Billy and Dane both write music, sometimes together, but usually separately. Consequently, they record sometimes together, but usually separately. They live thirty miles apart and are very, very busy men, and although they both have Pro Tools and high-speed internet, the idea of emailing files back and forth all the time is kind of tedious. So they normally just congregate at one or the other's studio for a few hours when the time comes to record a Neon Salamander tune. |
